I thought I would give my story with the tongue problems, as I supposed it might help someone out there. Out of the blue, 4 months ago, I started having tongue problems. It started as a feeling of wet toilet paper in my mouth, it was uncomfortable but something I put up with for a few weeks until it started feeling hairy and my lymph nodes became swollen. On examining my tongue, I noticed tiny cracks and one big crack down the middle, which looked as though my tongue was being split in two.
A month after my initial symptoms, I went to the doctor. He examined me and told me there was nothing wrong with me and my tongue looked normal. He told me to use mouthwash and sent me on my way. I did as my doctor told me and it wasn’t long before the pain came. My tongue became sandpapery, spiky, and it tasted metallic. There was much discomfort; it affected sleep and my anxiety level was high. Eating was the only thing that brought relief.
I sucked hard candies and antibacterial lozenges, rubbed my tongue with ginger, used antihistamines, gargled with salt water, and kept using the different mouthwashes. Nothing worked, and I was at my wits end. I didn’t want to go back to my family doctor so I went to a walk-in clinic to be seen by a different doctor. I was sent home with antibiotics. Symptoms continued, went back to my family doctor and got more antibiotics. Those antibiotics didn’t work either, so I went to the hospital emergency department, got more antibiotics and Tylenol 3′s.
The last round of antibiotics were extremely strong and made me very ill with nausea and cramping, but my tongue cleared up a little which had me convinced it was a tongue infection that with the right treatment could be cured. I then went back to my family doctor who insisted there was nothing wrong but made an appointment for me with a nose, ear, and throat specialist.
